People say that lightning cannot strike in the same place twice. Well Murs and 9th Wonder are here to prove them wrong. This is the second time that Murs and 9th have worked together, the first time being on Murs – 3:16. On 3:16, Murs provided his visual landscapes of musical wordplay with 9th inserting his patented beat-smith wizardry to make a perfect project. With Murs – Murray’s Revenge album they have defied laws of nature and has elected to have 9th produce all the beats on this album as well. The outcome is great follow up to an already great formula.
The great thing about Murs is that he has done Hip-Hop for a long time with his crew Living Legends, 3MG, Felt and numerous solo albums. All of his experience and subject matter makes Murray’s Revenge a very focused album. Songs like his L.A. anthem (the video can be seen here) will make you appreciate L.A. if you live here or makes you want to visit if you do not live in L.A. Another stand out track titled D.S.W.G. (Dark Skinned White Girls) gives a life lesson to be yourself no matter what people think or say. That is the unique quality of Murs is that he can layout a story that would be given by a mentor or older brother without sounding preachy.
Murs and 9th Wonder are both in top form on Murray’s Revenge and electrify (I’m taking that lightning reference a little to far) all of the tracks on this album. Hopefully this musical pairing will continue for future albums because this is not only what Hip-Hop needs but also music in general. Revenge is best served cold but Murray’s Revenge is best served loud, so turn it up and give it a listen.
Chocolate Swim EP
Are you getting tired of all the free stuff yet? First a open source movie, then a free video and now a free album. Here is another question, what do you get when you mix one part music label Chocolate Ind. and mix one part cartoon block Adult Swim? The Chocolate Swim EP of course! (Didn’t you see the link at the top?) Adult Swim is at it again offering up an EP of various artists that is similar to the Danger Doom – Occult Hymn EP released by them. The artists gracing Chocolate Swim are Kovas, Lady Sovereign, Ghislain Poirier, Mos Def, Diverse, Vast Aire and MF Doom. If Adult Swim keeps this up they will be producing records by the end of the year with the imaginary album called, “Swim Doom!?”

DJRx (Definitive Jux Pharmacy) is now offering MP3 downloads. The whole Definitive Jux sight has been restructured to deliver their content directly to their fans. Another thing to note about the new sight is that they have made available their 12″ vinyl catalog for download. I was at a lost for words because now I can have Camu Tao’s Wireless on my MP3 and record player. Buying and purchasing is just like any other music store whereas you add to your cart and purchase. So far all the music that I have purchased has not been DRM protected so you can take your music with you everywhere and not be locked to a DRM MP3 player (such as an iPod) which I really enjoy. Overall I think this is a great addition to independent music and makes it easier to get what you want. Come on Def Jukies…
Mr. Lif – Mo’ Mega mixtape mixed by DJ Big Wiz
Mr. Lif has been putting in work ever since his first 12″ I heard called Farmhand. Mr. Lif’s vocals and wordplay on that single, his EPs, first album: I Phathom and various side projects like the Perceptionists has made me a fan of his music. His new CD: Mo’ Mega will be released on June 13th and as a teaser for your MP3 player or computer you can get a glimpse of his album with this download. Discover more…
The 2006 MTV Movie Awards Preview (No Spoilers)
I received my tickets to go to the MTV Movie Awards through Gnarls Barkley. How you might ask? Well I was at the Gnarls Barkley sight and saw that they had a MySpace sight also (like everyone else in the universe) so I clicked the link. In their MySpace blog it had info of being in the pit audience for the MTV Movie Awards. So I filled out the info and in a couple of days got the tickets. Anyone going to the awards next year and want to be in the pit, I suggest to wear comfortable shoes because I had to stand from 3:30 pm through 10:30 pm.
Jessica Alba was hosting the show this year and I think she did a good job. I have really not seen her do much comedy but some of her skits and lines were pretty funny. The second thing that stood out about Alba was how skinny she looks in person and for that matter most of the female celebrities. The pairing of some of the presenters lead to some funny moments because of the different personalities. One moment that comes to mind was Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx the stars of the upcoming Miami Vice because being in the pit I could actually see the teleprompter and Jamie Foxx was not reading a word from it. Colin Farrell was trying to stay with it but Jamie Foxx kept going off and it was hilarious. Another moment came from Ludacris and Rosario Dawson and what Ludacris says right before they open the envelope. Samuel L. Jackson came out by himself and was just as cool as ever. Most of the winners and presenters were in top form and had me laughing at celebrities that I did not think were comical before.
There were three musical performers at the MTV Movie Awards: Christina Aguliera, Gnarls Barkley and AFI. Christina Aguliera’s set was less pop than ever before and I will give her credit to her peformance, dancers and band really put in work. Did this make me a Christina Aguliera fan? No but it was entertaining. Gnarls Barkley was the artists that I came to see and they did not disappoint. Their set was a spacey fantasy (you will know what I mean when you see the show) and had everyone clapping and dancing. Try to figure out which one is Danger Mouse when you see the show. Cee-lo sounds as good as he sounds on record if not better. Gnarls Barley was definitely a highlight of the show for me. I have to admit that I did not know who AFI was going into the show but they had a lot of fans there. The people in the pit even had to make a costume change for their performance. AFI made their presence known by putting in a lot of energy into their set. A behind the scene moment from AFI that was cool for the pit was that the drummer gave his sticks to a couple of their fans. Some more behind the scene moments from the show was Jessica Alba shouting out, “Flavor Flav!”, Rosario Dawson doing a little dance, LL Cool J getting pawed by a lot of females, Keanu Reeves trying to get water for the pit and Will Ferrell rubbing some guy’s bushy hair ever so gently.
The 2006 MTV Movie Awards was a great experience overall and has me excited to see how it turns out because they shot the show out of order. The 2006 MTV Movie Awards will air June 8th at 9:00 pm. See you there.
Danger Doom – Occult Hymn
Danger Doom and Adult Swim are at it again with the musical stylings of MF Doom, Danger Mouse and the Adult Swim characters. At the Adult Swim sight they are offering for a limited time a special Occult Hymn EP featuring remixes and original recordings. Nice addition to the The Mouse and the Mask LP released by Danger Doom last year.

Thanks to Detrimental Storm for reminding me of one of the best Hip-Hop festivals to hit California, Rock The Bells. They are now on their fourth festival and it seems they are not losing steam. The lineup for this year looks to be amazing with performances by:
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Redman
De La Soul
Aesop Rock
Living Legends
Del The Funky Homosapien
Immortal Technique
Murs 3:16
Self Scientific
Visionaries
Planet Asia
Hosted by Supernatural
Rock The Bells will begin on August 5th at the NOS Events Center (San Bernardino, CA) and end on August 6th at the Sleep Train Pavilion (at Concord). This will not be one to miss because in previous years at Rock The Bells they were the first to have the entire Wu-Tang perform onstage in over 10 years. Now with ODB’s death (R.I.P.) that incredible event can never happen again. So do not miss out like I did and countless others and buy your tickets now because the Ecliptic One himself will be present to share in the festivities.
